Fractalized deployed a live, income-generating commercial vessel on Base by combining off-chain asset ownership with on-chain ERC-20 issuance, secondary liquidity, and automated yield distribution. Tulip is operational, tradable, and producing real income under live operating conditions.
Tulip is the first commercial vessel to be tokenized, issued, and operated as a live, yield-generating real-world asset. The project demonstrates how income-producing physical assets can be structured, fractionalized, and distributed through blockchain systems while remaining fully operational off-chain.
This case study documents what was built and deployed, and how Base was used to support compliant issuance, secondary liquidity, and automated yield distribution. The system has already processed and completed its first income distribution under live operating conditions.
Commercial shipping is a large, income-producing asset class, but participation is typically limited to institutions due to high capital requirements, long lockups, and opaque ownership structures. While tokenization has been widely discussed, few implementations have delivered a complete, operational lifecycle that connects real vessel income to on-chain holders.
The challenge was to move beyond theory and deploy a fully working system that integrates asset ownership, token issuance, liquidity, and yield distribution.
MT Tulip is a 15,857 DWT chemical tanker operating in bunkering services out of Port Louis, Mauritius. The vessel was selected based on operational stability and revenue visibility.
Key characteristics include:
- Operating under an existing fixed-rate time-charter contract
- Zero off-hire days in the prior 12 months
- Dual-engine configuration reducing operating costs
- Managed by Kaptanoğlu Shipping Group, with over 120 years of maritime operating history
These properties made Tulip suitable for a first live deployment of a tokenized, yield-bearing asset.
Tulip was deployed through a complete, closed-loop process:
Asset Structuring
A dedicated special-purpose vehicle (SPV) was established to hold the vessel interest, isolate risk, and manage operating cash flows.
On-Chain Issuance
Tokenized income rights were issued as ERC-20 tokens on Base. Token ownership is gated by KYC and AML checks at the protocol level.
Capital Formation
A closed MVP raise of $107,000 was completed to validate the legal, technical, and operational stack under live conditions.
Asset Ownership
The SPV acquired a proportional ownership interest in MT Tulip corresponding to the capital raised.
Secondary Liquidity
Tokens were deployed into a controlled liquidity pool, enabling secondary trading without peer-to-peer matching.
Yield Distribution
Net operating income from the vessel is programmatically distributed to verified token holders via smart contracts. The first distribution has been completed and paid in USDC, reflecting an 18% annualized return based on actual operating performance.
Token issuance, transfers, and liquidity operations are executed entirely on-chain, with ownership and transaction history verifiable on Base.
Tulip was deployed on Base to support low-cost token issuance, predictable execution, and continuous secondary trading for a real-world asset with frequent on-chain interactions. Base enabled ERC-20 issuance, liquidity pool deployment, and ongoing distribution flows without prohibitive transaction costs, making a live, yield-generating asset economically viable on-chain.
Tulip shows that Base can support real-world assets with recurring cash flows, secondary liquidity, and compliance constraints. The deployment validates Base as infrastructure not only for speculative use cases, but for long-lived, income-generating systems that require reliability, cost efficiency, and continuous operation.
The Tulip case establishes a repeatable framework for connecting physical asset income with on-chain capital markets.
